Game overview

When reviewing a MOBA in 2015, the n. #1 question to address is: do we really need another one? Is there anything original enough to make it worth playing? The short answer, in Supernova's case, is yes.
Apart from the original-but-not-so-much sci-fi \ space setting (which at least is not the same ol' fantasy one), Supernova brings an appreciated dose of strategy and complexity thanks to its RTS elements: minions don't spawn at predefined intervals to follow the same, computer-defined path, but are controlled directly by players.
You'll have a tech tree to research, and resources to spend to buy the most appropriate units for your objectives, just like in a RTS game.
This really adds a lot of gameplay opportunities, and we're sure that hardcore players looking for a deep, complex game will find in Supernova a great fit.

➔ Main points:

  • Join the battle between aliens and humans: the universe itself is the battle arena, and only the best commanders will save their species from interstellar annihilation.
  • Wide variety of commanders to control, from giant robots to cyborgs to interstellar races adapted to the unyielding harshness of space.
  • Control your minions directly: research new units and spend your resources to produce them just like in a RTS game.
  • Classic MOBA roots: 5 vs 5 PvP battles on 3-lanes maps.
  • Fast-paced action, long games.

Some help to get started...

Battles among minions might get pretty crowded...

As we've said before, Supernova is a deep and complex game. The tutorial alone won't be enough to let you grasp all the fundamental aspects of the title, let alone the most advanced strategies. The automatic upgrade system alleviates the stress of micromanaging your stats, bonuses, abilities, and economy - at least at the beginning. This allows new players to focus on learning the map and, more importantly, fighting opponents.

Faction Skills

"Before each match, you can load up on four faction abilities that add new utilities to your Commander’s built-in skills. My lizard-warrior Commander was great at in-your-face bruising, but struggled when ganked or fighting long-range Commanders. I brought sensors (wards) to solve my vision problem (the fog of war is perhaps too dense at times), and I dropped a massive AOE nuclear bomb on enemies hiding behind towers I struggled to siege.

Not all minions are created equal: artillery, infantry and air units will all have their role...

If I’d brought other abilities into that particular match, I’d operate completely differently in and out of combat. That’s fascinating to me." (IGN)

Standard minions? No thanks

The most original aspect of the game (and probably, the most important reason for a MOBA veteran to give Supernova a chance) is the strong presence of RTS elements like resource management, research trees and controlled minion production. Players can spend faction's resources to upgrade their minions — armor or damage increases, for instance — or buy brand-new units. "I spent a ton of resources on amassing an army of tanks in my top lane, then rotated into the jungle to farm neutral camps while my artillery annihilated the enemy’s infantry. Had they responded by selling their soldiers and building more air units, the next wave would have obliterated my tanks.

Minor real-time strategy elements see your faction earning resources over time, which players can spend on buffs for their minions — armor or damage increases, for instance — or on new units entirely.

Lane awareness is different than other MOBAs because you're not only worrying about what other players are doing to your creeps, you've got to keep tabs on how their strategies are adjusting on the fly." (IGN)

Conquering the Jungle

... but of course, PvP duels are the most adrenalinic moments

There are several camps in each map, with the largest ones featuring some pretty badass bosses that you'll have the possibility to tame under your control once defeated. Together with the possibility to control your horde of minions, this will allow players to prepare some huge attacks on a particular lane and add a lot of variety \ imprevedibility to the game.
